CHOICE

At work I have a computer program called CHOICE, that allows me to select from a list of options and controls which version of a particular bit of software will run when I open a file.

If I choose one of these options and the file doesn’t work as I expected or intended, I go back and, here’s the important bit. I CHOOSE a different option from my list, opening the file in a different version of the software.

I know full well that if I select the same option as before, all of the same programs will run and the unwanted result will be exactly the same. Not only that, it will continue to do this no matter how many times I select the same option. So the fundamental element in eliciting a different, perhaps more desired result, is in making a different selection from the available options in the first place.

If I telephone a customer help line and select from their endless list of options, and finish up being put through to the wrong department, there’s no point in me calling back and making all the same selections over and over again. I still end up with the wrong department. I have to make a conscious effort to choose a different option.

This logic applies to everything we do. Our lives are full of choices, from what clothes we wear in the morning to what order of steps we are going to go through in our daily preparations of getting up and getting ready to tackle the day. From simple things such as the route we take to work, through to the way we feel, the way we converse with others, the career changes we make, even the habits and addictions we choose to have.

Before we put that greasy burger in our mouths we have a choice whether we want to do that or not.

Now imagine if the only food available in my reality of the world was a greasy burger. My choices would be rather limited, meaning that the I could either, eat the greasy unhealthy burger or not eat at all and starve. Not much of a choice really.
Then imagine if I was able to expand my own reality to include all of the varieties and types of food in an entire supermarket. Now I have some alternatives to the greasy burger that are far more appealing and I can choose something else that can bring about a different result. Without this expanded reality and knowing that there are more options out there though, I would have been stuck with my greasy burger reality.

Some would say more choice makes for more indecision, perhaps when you look at reality based martial arts. In this case the more techniques you have in your library the longer it can be before you find the right one for the job, which by then, can sometimes be too late. However, for the majority of the time, the more choice we have for any task or decision, and the more informed we are about each option, the more fulfilled lives we will be able to lead.

I worked with a guy once who absolutely hated his job. Hated it with a passion I never thought possible. But in his world he only saw one other option, which was to leave work and become un-employed. So, with the need to still feed and clothe his family, he chose to stay in the job from hell and continue to moan and procrastinate about how awful it was.
His dream was to win the lottery. Not for the primary result of having a lorry load of cash at his disposal, but so that it would give him more choice. With the extra money, he’d have a massive list of options open to him that he could pick from at his leisure.
Not a bad idea, except the rest of his life was now spent moaning about his horrible job and waiting for the lottery finger to point at him. He’s still there 10 years on by the way!

So what we need to do is open up more choice, in whatever it is we do. And often the options are there we just can’t see them clearly. Or they may seem a little out of our reach, or perhaps even too scary to consider.

For me, NLP is my tool for opening up more choice. Allowing me to have more freedom to see far more options and so, open up new worlds that may hold some different, more appealing answers and possibilities.

So when you’re feeling sad, you now have the choice not to feel that way. Imagine being able to change the emotion that has been associated to a bad memory. Imagine being able to let go of events that hurt you every time you remember them. Choosing to be happy, confident, positive, enthusiastic when ordinarily the only choices you thought you had would have been to feel sad, negative or scared.

Remember, when we were born we only had 2 fears; the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. All other fears were learned and if we can learn these fears we can learn anything, we can learn new choices.

It’s all about choice, your choice. Take charge, get in control of your “self” and open up more choice and then, to quote a famous Del Trotter, “the World’s your Lobster”!

Stay safe, have fun
